Flash Official Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on Nexus S [How-To]

On the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google said that Nexus S will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update soon in July and Google is turn on the words, today Google is going to roll out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for the Nexus through OTA (Over The Air), however the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for Nexus S isn’t available in all countries of the world.

On your Nexus S, go to Setting, there you’ll get OTA update notification, turn on the Wi-Fi, download update and install on your device. However if you haven’t received the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean notification due to any reason, or the update isn’t available in your country and you can’t wait, you can also install the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OTA update on any Nexus S manually. Do note that this update is just for GSM Nexus S model number I9023, I9020T and the I9020A, you can check your smartphone detail from Setting>About Phone.

Read on how to install Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update on Nexus S manually but first make sure that your device battery is charge and ClockworkMod Recovery is installed on your Nexus S,  be sure to follow our this guide to install ClockworkMod recovery. Make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Instructions

Step #1: Download the official OTA JB 4.1.1 update (soju-ota_jro03e.zip) from here [Mirror 1] [Mirror 2] [Mirror 3]

Step #2: Copy the download .zip file to the SD card of your Nexus S.

Step #3: Turn the device off and put into CWM recovery mode, to do so simply reboot the phone by holding down Volume Down and the Power buttons, first the device will enter in fastboot mode, there use volume keys to navigate and power button to select, and select RECOVERY option.

Step #4: In recovery mode, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, it’s important because if anything goes wrong, you’ll be able to go back. To make, select “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again.

Step #5: Perform full wipe, first select the wipe data/factory reset, and confirm on the next screen then select wipe cache and confirm on the next screen. After that navigate to ‘Mounts & Storage’ and select the ‘format /system’ option.

Step #6: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.

Step #7: Once the installation is completed, select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.”

    Hi! It’s only work with a rooted Nexus S, or is it possible to update it without clockwork mode?
    When I updated from gingerbread to ICS, I just had to start the bootloader
    and select install update from sd card. In this case it doesen’t work?

      no it doesnt work with bootloader, ClockworkMod must be installed on the device….
