Install Android 4.0 ICS ROM ‘CodeNameAndroid’ On Your Galaxy S [How-To]


We heard that Samsung won’t release ICS for Galaxy S Gt-i9000 because it has hardware limitations and insufficient to run Android 4.0. But thanks to XDA developers who release a ROM called CodeNameAndroid for Galaxy S, this ROM has much exciting features and customizable options, but it still under development so you can expect some bugs, for instance, Airplane Mode automatically activates when the phone boots, it is impossible to 2G/3G connections, and signals do not display properly.

To install this ROM your device should be rooted with ClockworkMod recovery installed, and its battery should be 70% charged, please note that this ROM is just for Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 model so don’t try it any other device.

DISCLAIMER: The below method is bit risky and we will not be held responsible if you lose data or your device gets damaged in the following of this guide so please proceed at your own risk.

Instructions to Install

Step #1: First make sure that SIM card lock is disabled by going to Settings > Location and Security > SIM card lock.

Step #2: Upgrade/downgrade your phone to Android 2.3.6 build XXJVU using this guide.

Step #3: Root the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 running Android 2.3.6 XXJVU firmware using this guide.

Step #4: Download the latest version (1.4.0, as of this writing) of CodeNameAndroid ROM fromhere or here, and save the package to your PC.

Step #5: Plug device to your PC via USB cable and Copy ROM package to the root on your device’s internal SD card. (Don’t use the microSD card / external SD card.)

Step #6: Unplugged the device from PC and switch off.

Step #7: Reboot to ClockworkMod Recovery. You can do this by simultaneously pressing and holding down the “Volume Up”, “Home” and “Power” buttons until the screen turns on.

Step #8: Reset your phone by selecting “Wipe data / factory reset” and confirm the operation on the next screen.

Step #9: Select “Install zip from SD card”

Step #10: Select “Choose zip from SD card”, and browse for the ROM file that you copied to your phone earlier.

Step #11: Confirm that you want to start the installation.  Your phone may reboot during the installation. It may take up to 5 – 10 minutes for the installation to finish. After installation, select “Go Back” and select “Reboot System Now” to reboot your phone.

Step #12: That’s it enjoy!
