Install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on Galaxy Nexus [How-To]

Recently Google released latest iteration Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, everyone is waiting to get the update, however it has been confirmed that Google will release the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Motorola Xoom in the mid of July through OTA (over the air), as for as OTA update isn’t available, but if you own a GSM or Verizon Galaxy Nexus you can taste the Jelly Bean here.

The Jelly Bean comes with number of new features like new Google service Google Now that helps you according to the search history, voice assistant, improved home screen, new keyboard that enables you to type fast then before, when you type a word it will guess the next word, improved camera app with new features and much more.

Thanks to guys over XDA who made is possible immediately, to flash the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus and GSM Galaxy Nexus, follow the below guide. Before you install first do note that your smartphone should be rooted with a custom recovery installed, you can use this toolkit or this guide to root the device and install ClockworkMod recovery.

The device battery should be charged and make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Instructions 

Step #1: Download the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM for the GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus from here [XDA Link] and for the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus here [XDA Link].

Step #2: Download the Super User app from here.  

Step #3: Plug the device to PC using USB cable.

Step #4: Transfer the downloaded files ROM .zip and Super User to device.

Step #5: Disconnect the device from PC.

Step #6: Turn the device off.

Step #7: Reboot the device into recovery mode by holding down the Volume up, volume down and power button until screen turns on, first the bootloader screen will show up, there highlight the recovery option using volume keys and then select the recovery option by using power button, it will take you into recovery mode (Note: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select).

Step #8: In recovery mode, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, it’s important because if anything not work out that you expect from this ROM, you’ll be able to easily revert back to your current state. To create backup select “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again.

Step #9: Perform full wipe, first select the wipe data/factory reset, and confirm on the next screen.

Step #10: After taking the backup of existing ROM and wiping the device select Install and locate the downloaded ROM .zip file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.

Step #11: Now you need to regain the root access on your device, it will also fix root, to do so, once again select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded CWM SuperSU.zip file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.

Step #12: Once the installation is completed, select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.”
