Install Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Droid 4 [firmware 98.72.18]


Verizon has just approved the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Motorola Droid 4 as build number 98.72.18 and it has been sent to testers. Though the update is being rolled out but if you haven’t received the update or can’t update the phone with OTA, worry not as testers have pulled out the update for manual installation.

The Jelly Bean update for Droid 4 packs almost all features you can expect from Jelly Bean such as Google Now app, keyboard with offline voice support, expandable notification bar, voice search and more. Verizon has also improved the interface, added easy to personalize home screen options, added data and hotspot connectivity.

This guide shows you how to install Android 4.1 Jelly bean update for Droid 4 containing firmware version 98.72.18. Keep in mind that your phone must running stock Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich build number 6.16.217. The below guide is for Droid RAZR HD but it should work on Droid 4 too.

Instructions

Step #1: Download the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Droid 4 from here [mirror].

Step #2: Place the downloaded zip file to external SD card of your phone. Don’t place to internal storage.

Step #3: Turn you phone off.

Step #4: Reboot your Droid 4 into recovery mode by holding down volume up, volume down and power menu, when boot menu appear, use volume down button to highlight the recovery option and power button to enter in recovery mode, when Android and Exclamation point appear, press both volume down and volume down button at the same time.

Step #5: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select.

Step #6: Select “apply update from external storage” and locate the downloaded update zip file. It would start installation.

Step #7: Once the installation is done, select “reboot” to reboot the phone.
