Install ClockworkMod Recovery on Galaxy Tab P1000

There’s no more official update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000, it’s stuck at the Android 2.3 Gingerbread, so what to do to taste latest Android versions? Of course, you can now just use custom ROMs for it that can be installed via a custom recovery like the ClockworkMod custom recovery. Here’s a step by step guide to install the ClockworkMod recovery on Galaxy Tab P1000 via a Technomancer’s kernel.

Take a look at the guide to install the recovery but first do keep in mind that your Galaxy Tab must be on stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the tablet’s battery should be charged and you need a Windows PC. Be sure to make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Instructions

Step #1: Download the Technomancer’s Kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery 5 (cwm-5-p1.tar) to your PC.

Step #2: Download the Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 (heimdall-suite-1.3.2-win32-.zip) to your PC, it may needs Microsoft C++ Redistributable already installed on your PC.

Step #3: Unzip the downloaded Heimdall Suite 1.3.2 file on PC, you’ll get a folder named Heimdall Suite containing required stuff and drivers.

Step #4: Turn off your tablet.

Step #5: Reboot the tablet into download mode, to do so reboot the tablet by holding down volume down and power button while plugging the tablet to the PC using USB cable.

Step #6: On your computer, open the Heimdall Suite folder and there run the zadig.exe file, it will install the USB drivers for device, select “Options”, then select “List All Devices”, a drop-down list will show up, from the list you need to select the “Samsung USB Composite Device” or “Gadget Serial” and then select Install Driver (Note: Now a prompt may show up saying the installer is unable, if it appears, select install this driver anyway).

Step #7: Once drivers are installed, unplug the tablet from your PC.

Step #8: Turn the tablet off again.

Step #9: Repeat the step 5 to plug the tablet again to PC in download mode.

Step #10: Untar Technomancer’s Kernel, you’ll get a file “zImage”, copy it to the Heimdall Suite folder.

Step #11: Run the command prompt and navigate to the Heimdall Suite folder, if you’re using the Windows 7, you can directly open the command prompt from the Heimdall Suite folder, to do so, open the Heimdall Suite folder, then right click on the mouse while holding down the shift button on the keyboard, a menu will appear from there select open command prompt here.

Step #12: Enter the following command to install the kernel:

heimdall flash –kernel zImage

It will show a installation blue line on tablet, once the installation is done, the tablet will reboot itself.

That’s it, you’re done, the ClockworkMod recovery is now installed on your tablet.

Hey, i followed through all the steps and couldn’t do #12 but fixed that with a SGT bootloader patch since mine was locked. It flashed the zImage fine but now it doesn’t boot up and is stuck on the samsung logo for 15 minutes.
I tried to put my tab into recovery mode but it is not doing this.
    Any help?

Dear, you have all required files and you’re on the right folder, as I said in step 11, open up the command prompt and navigate to Heimdall Suite folder, if you’re on windows 7 or above, follow the step 11 to install kernel, if you’re on Windows XP or lower, open the command the command prompt from start menu>programs>accessories and navigate to Heimdall Suite folder. To enter any drive, write drive name with “;” and press enter and to enter in folder write “”cd folder name” and press enter.

I have windows 7 and i held shift and right clicked in the heimdall suite folder to open command prompt.
from command prompt i found the drive to be set to the heimdall suite folder which was right. I typed in:heimdall flash –kernel zImage
        and it said it worked.
i saw the blue progress bar.
and the last thing said on command prompt was that it was succesful and rebooting.
it hasnt booted up yet, and i still showing the logo screen. i tried to charge it and the battery icon shows the progress gear but no indication of it actually charging since i think that the new kernel is in place and isnt working.

Hey, the thread didn’t really help me as it wasn’t fully talking about my situation. I googled “zImage p1000 cwm” or something and downloaded CWM Recovery _install_zImage_1.4Ghz_v_3.0.2 to see if it was my kernel that was creating the problem.
Well i did all the steps but now with this new kernel.
I had a split second of amazement thinking i had pulled it off when i saw the Galaxy Tab animation play after the samsung logo, however it seems that i have fallen my tab into boot loop where it tries to boot, vibrates the typical ‘not responding’ vibration and turns off and on and the cycle continues.

I’m now thinking of getting Odin and a stock rom from sammobile.com and will try to get the normal os so i can maybe try this whole process with gingerbread this time.
        Thanks for the support

The Technomancer link does no work. So I successfully plucked for the alternative method using Odin here: http://theunlockr.com/2012/05/07/how-to-root-and-flash-the-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-galaxy-tab-p1000-running-gingerbread/
