HTC said that HTC Desire HD won’t get Ice Cream Sandwich due to its hardware limitations but Android development community can’t stop helping HTC Desire HD users, a recognized XDA developer member named nikhil007mmus has released Nik Project X custom ROM that based on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The developer packed the ROM with lots of useful features, it’s pretty fast and has lots of tweaks and apps, it features full Sense 4 and Sense Weather lockscreen, it has HTC One X’s cube animations and browser, you can switch between recent apps by long pressing on the Time on the Top Right. The ROM is very fast and stable for battery Life, the keyboard apps is with Trace enabled, the developer added HTC One V’s skins added and number of useful tweaks.

The ClockworkMod recovery must be installed on your phone, and you should make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Step #1: Download the latest version of ROM from here [XDA LINK].
Step #2: Transfer the downloaded .zip file to SD card of device.
Step #3: Turn the device off.
Step #4: Reboot the device into recovery mode by pressing and holding down volume down and power buttons, first you’ll see HBOOT, there select recovery option (Note: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select).
Step #5: In recovery mode, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, it’s important because if anything not work out that you expect from this ROM, you’ll be able to easily revert back to your current state. To create backup select “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again.
Step #6: Perform wipe, first select the wipe data/factory reset, and confirm on the next screen. Then select mounts and storage, then select format /system it will format system partition, you may need to confirm the action on next screen.
Step #7: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. After sometime, the graphical installer will appear, there click continusally click on next button and select Perform Wipe it ask, then again continusally click on Next until ROM start installation.
Step #8: Once the installation is done, you may get message to reboot phone, reboot phone by tapping on yes.
