Install Jelly Bean on Motorola Xoom Without Losing Root Access and Unlocked Bootloader

Not a while ago, Motorola rolled out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean for the Motorola Xoom but as most of you know well that the update removes the root access and lock the bootloader again. Those of you don’t want to lose root and unlocked bootloader, now a solution is available for them, thanks to recognized XDA developer contributor stachre.

He provided a repackage Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update to do so, don’t try any custom ROM because custom ROMs involve many modification. The update will install a new bootloader that is already unlocked, read on how to install repackage Jelly Bean update on Motorola Xoom.

Do keep in mind that the update is just for Motorola Xoom US Wi-Fi MZ604. ClockworkMod recovery must be installed on the tablet, be sure to use this Android app to install ClockworkMod recovery. Make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Step #1: Download the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean Repackage Update JRO03H.

Step #2: Transfer the downloaded file to the internal SD card of device.

Step #3: Turn the device off.

Step #4: Reboot the device into recovery mode by holding down volume up + power buttons until you see Motorola logo, there press volume down and “Android Recovery” will show up, then press volume up to boot into recovery (Note: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select).

Step #5: In recovery mode, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, it’s important because if anything not work out that you expect from this ROM, you’ll be able to easily revert back to your current state. To create backup select “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again.

Step #6: Perform full wipe, first select the wipe data/factory reset, and confirm on the next screen then select wipe cache and confirm on the next screen. Lastly select “advanced”, then “Wipe Dalvik Cache” and then wipe by selecting “Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache”.

Step #7: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.

Step #8: Once the installation is completed, select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.”

That’s it, you’re done. Enjoy Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on your Motorola Xoom, if the device gets stuck on Motorola logo/Bootloops, put device into recovery mode and wipe data/factory reset, the reboot device again. Do comment below for queries.
