Install Official CyanogenMod 9 (Cm9) on Galaxy S3 [How-To]
CyanogenMod 9 (CM9) is one most popular Android custom ROM that based on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and those who’re waiting to try this on their Galaxy S3 would be happy to know that now it’s available for your new Samsung Galaxy S3, this custom ROM is especially designed is to improve the performance and reliability over stock Android , a big thanks to hardworking XDA developer member XpLoDWilD who brought the CM9 nightly build for the Galaxy S3. The ROM comes with lots of great features, you can read complete features list here.
CyanogenMod 9 team has fixed number of bugs in the ROM but it still has a few bugs like there’s no FM Radio but you can try a third party app from Google Play Store like Sprint FM and LED isn’t working in Camera app that can be a cause of force close however other Camera’s features are working fine. You can may also face some issues in Wi-Fi but if you really want to try this awesome custom ROM, ignore these minor bugs and install it on your Galaxy S3.
Before you install first keep in mind that this is just for the international Galaxy S3 model number GT-I9300 so don’t try it on any other model or variant, you can check the device detail from Setting>About Phone. ClockworkMod recovery should be installed on the device, check out guide to install it. You should also make make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Install First Time CM9
Step #1: Download the latest version of ROM from here and also download the Google apps package from here and save them on PC.
Step #2: Plug the device to PC using USB cable.
Step #3: Transfer the downloaded file to the internal SD card of device, don’t place on external SD card.
Step #4: Disconnect the device from PC.
Step #5: Turn the device completely off.
Step #6: Reboot the device into recovery mode by holding down power, home and volume up buttons (Note: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select).
Step #7: In recovery mode, create a nandroid backup of your current ROM, it’s important because if anything not work out that you expect from this ROM, you’ll be able to easily revert back to your current state. To create backup select “Backup and Restore”, and then select “Backup” again.
Step #8: Perform full wipe, first select the wipe data/factory reset, and confirm on the next screen then select wipe cache and confirm on the next screen. You also need to Wipe Dalvik Cache, to do so, go to advance select Wipe Dalvik Cache then confirm on next screen.
Step #9: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded ROM file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.
Step #10: Now you need to install the Google apps package, repeat the last step to install it.
Step #11: Once the installation is completed, select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.” That’s it, you’ve flashed the ROM, enjoy CM9 on Galaxy S3.
Upgrade from Earlier Version of CM9
Step #1: Download the latest version of ROM from here and transfer the downloaded file to the internal SD card of device, don’t place on external SD card.
Step #2: Turn the device completely off.
Step #3: Reboot the device into recovery mode by holding down power, home and volume up buttons (Note: In recovery mode use volume keys to navigate and power button to select).
Step #4: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded ROM file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.
Step #5: Once the installation is completed, select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.” That’s it, you’ve flashed the ROM, enjoy CM9 on Galaxy S3.
