Root and ClockworkMod for HTC Vivid Running Android 4.0.3 ICS

HTC has rolled out the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich officially for the HTC Vivid and those of you have upgraded the smartphone to Ice Cream Sandwich and want to root the device, here’s everything they want. A XDA developer member cruzin_cruzing has found a method to root and install ClockworkMod custom recovery on the HTC Vivid running the Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. Read on how to root and install CWM.

Before you root make sure that device bootloader is unlocked, if you haven’t unlocked the bootloader, head over to this link to unlock officially. You’ll have to use Windows PC with device drivers installed, download drivers here. Disable all system tools such as HTC Sync, antivirus, firewall program, please make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps, and turn the USB Debugging on, to do so just tap Menu> Settings> Application> Development.

Instructions

Step #1: Download the following files: Fastboot - Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signedClockworkMod Recovery 5.5.0.4

Step #2: Transfer the downloaded Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip to the SD card of device, then unzip the Fastboot.zip file into a folder on PC, you’ll get four files. Then unzip the PH39IMG.zip file and you’ll get recovery.img, copy this file to the Fastboot folder.

Step #3: Make sure the device isn’t plugged with PC and turn it off. Once the device is completely off, put it into boorloader mode, to do so turn on by holding down Volume Down and Power buttons. Then in bootloader mode, highlight select Fastboot with Volume keys and select with power button.

Step #4: In fastboot mode, plug the phone to PC via USB cable, you’ll see “FASTBOOT USB” on device.

Step #5: Open command prompt on PC and go to Fastboot folder, if you’re using Windows 7, to do it, open fastboot folder and hold shift + ctrl buttons and right click on any empty area of folder, a drop menu will appear, select Open Command Prompt Here.

Step #6: Enter following command:

fastboot devices

It will show the serial number of device, which means the device is successfully is plugged with PC.

Step #7: Enter another command to install recovery img:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Once the installation is done, you’ll get a message  “Finished/Okay”. Then select “BOOTLOADER” on device, it will take you back to bootloader mode, there select “Recovery” and it will put the device in bootloader mode.

Step #8: Select “Install Zip from SD Card” then “Choose Zip from SD Card” and locate the downloaded file that you’ve transferred in above step and confirm installation. Wait till installation complete.

Step #9: Once the installation is done, return to main menu just select “Go Back” after that select “Reboot System Now.”

That’s it, you’re done, your device is now rooted with ClockworkMod recovery installed, head over to Google Play store, there download and install the Root Checker app to check that your device is rooted or not. Comment below for queries.

    Thank you !! This was so easy to do. My phone – HTC Velocity (Australia) – Vivid is the same device.
    My phone is now permanently rooted. Now I can have some fun with it :)
