Root and ClockworkMod for Nexus 7 running Android 4.1.2 JZO54K

Recently Google released the Android 4.1.2 JZO54K software update for the Nexus 7 and those of you who have upgraded their Nexus 7 to Android 4.1.2 and now looking for root and ClockworkMod Recovery, you’re on the right place, here’s what you need.

The below guide will walk you through how to root Nexus 7 on Android 4.1.2 JZO54K firmware and install ClockworkMod recovery on it, first do keep in mind that the bootloader of your Nexus 7 must be unlocked, check out our this guide to unlock bootloader. Make sure you’re using Windows PC and Android ADB are installed on it, check out our this guide to install ADB and be sure to make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps.

Instructions

Step #1: Download fastboot package (fastbooy.zip) to your PC.

Step #2: Unzip the downloaded fastboot .zip file to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools that can be found in C:\.

Step #3: Download the Root Package (JB-SuperSU.zip) and ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM-grouper-recovery.img).

Step #4: Place the downloaded JB-SuperSU.zip file to your Nexus 7.

Step #5: Copy the downloaded CWM-grouper-recovery.img to the android-sdk-windows\platform-tools where you’ve unzipped the fastboot.zip file in step 2.

Step #6: Turn your Nexus 7 off.

Step #7: Reboot your Nexus 7 into fast boot mode, to do reboot the tablet by holding down volume down and power buttons, you’ll be enter in bootloader mode, there select fastboot mode.

Step #8: Plug the tablet to PC using USB cable.

Step #9: On your PC, open command prompt and navigate to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory, if you’re using Windows 7 or above, you can command prompt directly from the folder, to do so open the folder, there right click while holding down shift button on keyboard.

Step #10: Enter following command to install recovery:  

fastboot flash recovery CWM-grouper-recovery.img

Once the recovery is installed, you’ll get the finished/okay message on the command prompt.

Step #11: On your Nexus 7, go to bootloader mode and select recovery option to enter in recovery mode. Now you need to install root package to root your Nexus 7.

Step #12: Select “Install”, locate the JB-SuperSU.zip and confirm the action.

Step #13: Once the .zip file is installed, return to main menu and reboot tablet, to do so select “Go Back” and then select “reboot system now”.

That’s it, you’re done, your Nexus 7 is rooted now with ClockworkMod recovery installed.
