What you should do with your newly purchased Sony Ericsson Xperia Play? Yes, if you like to customize your device, you’ll have to root the device, rooting will void the every limitation of Sony Ericsson on your Xperia Play and enables you to install every non-Google Play application on your device too.
XDA developer member CrimsonKnight13 has found two methods to root your Xperia Play, one is SuperOneClick that root the device in one click and another is DooMLoRD’s toolkit. Here’s instruction for both methods to root the device. But keep in mind that these methods are just for Sony Ericsson Xperia Play model number R800x running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread or lower version than Android 2.3.3. If you want to know about the detail of your smartphone, on your device, go Setting>About Phone, there you’ll complete detail about your device.
Before you root the device first note that Android SDK and device USB drivers should be installed on your PC, you can download drivers from here, disable all system tools such as antivirus, firewall program. On your device turn the USB Debugging on, to do so just tap Menu> Settings> Application> Development after that enable unknown sources, from Settings > Security > Unknown Sources. Please make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc because the below procedure may wipe data, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps, make sure SD card isn’t mounted.

Instructions To Root With SuperOneClick
Step #1: Download SuperOneClick tool from XDA to your PC.
Step #2: Unzip the downloaded tool into a folder on your PC.
Step #3: Open the folder where you’ve unzipped the above file and double click on SuperOneClick tool to run it.
Step #4: Plug the device to PC using USB cable, then click on root button and let the rooting begin. That’s it.
Instructions To Root With DooMLoRD Toolkit
Step #1: Download DooMLoRD’s Toolkit to your PC.
Step #2: Unzip the downloaded toolkit into a folder on your PC.
Step #3: Open the folder where you’ve unzipped the above file and double click on runme.bat file to run it. Read the instructions.
Step #4: Now once you’re prepared for rooting, plug the device to PC using USB cable to start rooting.
That’s it, you’re done.
