Unlocking HTC Droid DNA Bootloader Is Possible Again – Guide

HTC Droid DNA was a lucky smartphone that comes with officially unlockable bootloader support but later Verizon forced HTC to pull out official support from HTC Dev Center and HTC accepted it but now you should not be worried about that, just say thanks to hardworking developer of Rootzwiki named jcase who posted an unofficial method to unlock the Droid DNA bootloader that makes you to able install custom recovery and root. Unlocking bootloader will make you able to customize the every aspect of your Droid DNA.

It’s important to note that you’ll not be re-lock the bootloader again and it will void the warranty of your phone. Use a Windows PC with Android ADB Installed, you can follow this guide to install Android ADB. Unlocking booyloader will wipe your device, so be sure to make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use file expert app to backup apps. Your Verizon Droid DNA must have 1GB of free space. Make sure the battery is fully charged, it’s really important.

DISCLAIMER: Please proceed the below guide at your own risk, Android Egis will not be held responsible if your device lost data or gets damaged following this guide. So you should follow instructions carefully and exactly.

Instructions

Step #1 : Download the back.ab file to your PC from here.

Step #2: Download DNA_TeamAndIRC.zip file to your PC from RootzWiki.

Step #3: Unzip the downloaded DNA_TeamAndIRC.zip. Put runme.sh, CIDGen.apk and backup.ab in the android-sdk/platform-tools/ directory, you may find it on C drive.

Step #4: Open up README.txt and read it.

Step #5: Open up command prompt and navigate to android-sdk/platform-tools/ directory, if you’re using Windows 7 or above, you can open command prompt directly from the folder, to do so open the folder from where you want to open command prompt, there press right click while holding down shift button on keyboard.

Step #6: Enter following command on command prompt:

adb install CIDGen.apk

Step #7: Launch the CIDGen app from your Droid DNA and proceed the instructions on the app.

Step #8: Make sure the /sdcard/CIDBLOCK.img file exists on your phone by entering the following command:

adb shell ls -l /sdcard/CIDBLOCK.img

If the file isn’t exist, don’t proceed. Re-run the app and verify the file with above command again.

Step #9: Now enter following commands:

adb push runme.sh /data/local/tmp/

adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/runme.sh

adb shell /data/local/tmp/runme.sh

It will loop forever and give out lots of No such file or link failed errors, leave it running for now.

Step #10: In a second terminal/command prompt, you need to use the adb to restore the modified backup, once it running, this command will ask to restore the file, allow it:

adb restore backup.ab

Step #11: Once you’re done, stop the runme.sh script in the first command wind, you can use control + c short key to do so simply close the window manually.

Step #12: Here do keep in mind that you’re past the point of no return. You should not continue if you will not be able to follow the complete process. Because rebooting or powering down the phone at the wrong time will brick the device, as I recommend above, make sure the you have 50% battery life before you continue.

Step #13: Enter following commands to continue:

adb shell rm /data/data/com.htc.usage/files/exploit/*

adb shell mv /data/DxDrm /data/DxDrm_org

adb shell mkdir /data/DxDrm

adb shell ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /data/DxDrm/DxSecureDB

adb reboot

Wait for reboot

adb wait-for-device

Step #14: At this point you need to repeat the first exploit again:

adb shell /data/local/tmp/runme.sh

As explained above that it will loop forever and give out lots of “No such file” or “link failed” errors – again, leave it running.

Step #15: On the second command window, you need to use ADB to store the backup, this command will allow you to do so, it will ask to allow, so allow it to continue:

adb restore backup.ab

Step #16: Once you’re done, stop the runme.sh script in the first terminal, to do so simply close the window.

Step #17: Now enter following commands:

adb shell mv /data/DxDrm /data/DxDrm_trash

adb shell dd if=/sdcard/CIDBLOCK.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5

adb reboot

Step #18: That’s it, you’re done, now you’re able to unlock the bootloader with HTC Developer Center. You need to select “All other supported models” there, you can use this guide to unlock bootloader with HTC Developer Center.

Great job, be sure to visit the original thread of RootzWiki to thanks and donate the original developer for this great effort here.
