New iPhone to be released this year?
When it comes to smartphones, there seems to constantly be a hotly-anticipated model. For fans of Apple the moment they could buy a new iPhone 5 last year would likely have been a pleasing one, as it had been widely talked about for a considerable period of time.
Users of handsets such as the iPhone 4 and 4S would perhaps have been keen to see what differences – and improvements – the manufacturer managed to make with the latest version, while for others it might have provided the ideal excuse to make the switch.
Currently the iPhone 5 and indeed its predecessors remain extremely popular, with the latest uSwitch Mobile Tracker placing the 16GB version of Apple’s latest smartphone top of the list in the UK. Pleasingly for the firm its 4S 16GB placed third, only recently losing second spot to the new Samsung Galaxy S4, while the 8GB iPhone 4 held on to sixth place.
However, despite the continued sales it seems likely that the company is already looking to the future, with discussion already building about what its next release will be. Sources are suggesting that the next step will be to unveil the iPhone 5S, which some have even said could make use of fingerprint technology.
It remains to be seen whether such a drastic step forward in terms of security is likely to be made, however, changes that people with 4G phones in the UK should realistically be able to start getting excited about include an improved camera and the introduction of iOS 7. In terms of appearance, it is possible that not much will change, but then Apple probably feels that there is little point in overhauling its already attractive and functional design.
So when can we expect to see the 5S? In short, we don’t really know just yet. The Wall Street Journal, citing people in the know with such matters, suggested that a “summer launch” is possible. Of course, other sources have said a later release date is more probable.
Further clues about new hardware may be provided at next month’s Apple Worldwide Developer’s conference, although its event page does not comment on this and simply states that attendees will be able to find out about the latest developments in iOS.
